all digital music platforms
Today, Australian-born bassist and composer Anna Butterss releases Mighty Vertebrate, their debut album for International Anthem, on all streaming platforms.
“A jazz-inflected melange of styles, from lo-fi hip-hop to slow-burn post-rock…Mighty Vertebrate proves that Butterss can thrive in whatever world they find themself in.” - Pitchfork
“With guests including Tortoise’s Jeff Parker, the LA bassist’s second solo album is cerebral, groovy and beyond categorization.” - The Guardian (4 Stars)
"It all culminates in a playful fusion that represents the bassist’s deep sense of adventure and vision." - Alternative Press
“Perhaps the best way to think of Butters' work is as simply 'jazz plus.’ It's suitably inclusive and ultimately most reflective of their sweeping ambitions.” - UNCUT (8/10)
"Smoked or singed, slow and sanguine or erratic and ecstatic, the pieces on the album interlock into one of 2024’s most memorable outings, a record that refuses to be pinned by genre or expectation." - Raven Sings The Blues
"Flexing their expertise for more subdued arrangements to round out the multi-talented artist’s CV, proving once again that range is where Butterss thrives, quite healthily." - Treble Zine
"Mighty Vertebrate feels like that classic statement-from-an-artist album, one that’s deeper and broader and more complex than what’s come before." - Molars
"Mighty Vertebrate isn’t a conventional jazz album. Butterss’ bass isn’t content to simply hold down the rhythm — it becomes a dynamic and melodic force, interacting with the other instruments in unexpected ways." - Glide Magazine
“Swirling orbits of rhythm, prismatic auditory experiences slip-sliding in and out of grooves that just keep on tunneling through, searching for the root. That’s the Butterss business and business is doing quite well." - 48hills
“Constructed with maximum intentionality.” - The Needle Drop

BIG EGO:
Mighty Vertebrates in Long Beach
In this new entry into the online version of our label's zine Tracing The Lines, recording engineer Chris Schlarb and Anna Butterss reflect on their Mighty Vertebrate recording session at Schlarb's BIG EGO studios in Long Beach, CA, with incredible black & white film photos taken by Robbie Jeffers.
Over two days, Butterss, Ben Lumsdaine, Gregory Uhlmann, and Josh Johnson captured music that felt intimate and raw, recorded live with minimal fuss. Schlarb details his approach to recording double bass, while Butterss shares how the studio became a cocoon for their creativity. It's a glimpse into the deep bonds and magic that unfolded in the space.

...about AB...
Anna Butterss is a Los Angeles-based bassist and composer, originally hailing from Adelaide, Australia. Known to many as a first-call for high profile artists in all genres, they have performed and recorded with Jeff Parker, Makaya McCraven, Andrew Bird, Phoebe Bridgers, Madison Cunningham, Aimee Mann, Jason Isbell, and many others.
Butterss is a core member of the fast-rising proto-trance supergroup SML, who Pitchfork says “represents the thrilling next phase of a vibrant L.A. community.” Their first solo album Activities was also praised by Pitchfork as "one of the most exciting, undersung jazz releases of 2022."
Butterss’s uniquely lyrical low end command has been foundational to progressive jazz recordings such as Jeff Parker’s Mondays at the Enfield Tennis Academy, Makaya McCraven’s Universal Beings, Daniel Villareal's Panamá 77 and Lados B, and SML's debut LP Small Medium Large.
